Founded by Ritchie Blackmore, the
former guitarist of Deep Purple and Rainbow, the band is an eclectic
mix of musicians from around the world. It combines the sounds
of acoustic guitar with such early instruments as mandolins, penny
whistles, violins, tambourines and hurdy-gurdies.
In 1989 Ritchie met Candice Night and the pair discovered a common
love of Renaissance culture, and for each other.
Blackmore's Night released its first album, "Shadow of the Moon,"
in 1998, using Jethro Tull flautist Ian Anderson on early tracks.
The group followed with "Under a Violet Moon" in 1999. It enjoyed
worldwide success, particularly in Japan and Germany.
